Manufacture of prostheses and orthoses by 3D printing: Study and Development [2022-2024]

Additive manufacturing (AM) technologies are vastly used in the industrial field, and currently increasingly are used in several areas of medicine. Various processes and many types of materials such as polymers, composites, metal alloys, and ceramics are used in this application (medicine). AM has revolutionized medical applications by printing; prostheses; custom patient-specific orthoses and implants for various body parts, as well as different surgical instruments and medical devices. This research project aims to improve the material production stipe through additive manufacturing. This is to improve the use of 3D printing in the manufactured product; by studying the effect of the parameters (scanning speed, layer thickness, energy input, etc.) of AM process (Stereolithography (SLA), Selective Laser Melting (SLM), and Fused Deposition Modeling(FDM)) on the quality of the products (orthosis or prosthesis). The materials used (polymers, compounds, etc.) will also be studied according to each process in order to determine the right combination (process/material). The optimization of the manufacturing process and topography will eventually be carried out to improve the topology and biomechanical function of orthoses and prostheses. On the other hand, in the context of a possible collaboration with the National Office of Equipment and Accessories for People with Disabilities (ONAAPH), part of this research will also aim to develop optimized prototypes of prostheses and orthoses and improve the production of these last using 3D printers inside this organization.
