Elaboration of non-ferrous alloys

Development of a new resorbable alloy based on zinc [2022-2024]

Metals and Alloys Division Team N°82: Elaboration of non-ferrous alloys Project title Development of a new resorbable alloy based on zinc Project manager: RAMOUL Chems Eddine Members: GHARBI Amel, BACHIRI Abdelkader, GASMI Fatima Zohra Summary of the research project The development of biodegradable bio-implants is desirable because conventional alloy bio-implants of titanium, cobalt and non-biodegradable stainless steels reside in the human body long after wounds have healed, which can cause allergic/foreign body reactions, adhesion or other adverse effects. In order to develop a biodegradable alloy suitable for manufacturing surgical implants, we hypothesized that Zn, a known biodegradable metal, could be alloyed with various elements to improve mechanical properties while maintaining biodegradability and biocompatibility. Considering their biocompatibilities, Mg, Ag, Cu, Fe, Ca and Zr have been selected as candidate alloying elements alongside classical metallic biomaterials available in clinic. In order to raise the challenge of a low-cost resorbable bio-implant that would combine good mechanical strength associated with moderate degradation in body fluids, we set as main objectives: - Develop a new alloy for resorbable implants by developing a zinc-based alloy (Zn-Mg) with the doping of nutritive and bactericidal elements (from 0.1 to 0.5% by weight of Ag, Cu , Fe, Ca, Zr), - Optimize its microstructure, its mechanical properties, and its biocompatibility.
