.Development and improvement of the properties of use of Chromium-Molybdenum steel [2022-2024]

Metals and Alloys Division Team N°79: Materials development and surface engineering Project title : Development and improvement of the properties of use of Chromium-Molybdenum steel Project manager: BOUREBIA Mounira Members: MEDDAH Soumaya, ACHOURI Sihem, OULABBAS Amel Summary of the research project Currently, the production of tubes is experiencing fierce competition between manufacturers in order to improve their quality and in particular properties such as corrosion resistance, weldability, fatigue resistance. These tubes are generally widely used in various fields such as oil and gas, as well as the agricultural industry. Steel is the most commonly used material for the manufacture of these tubes, they must meet certain characteristics such as rigidity, resistance to impact, temperature, corrosion…etc. Chrome molybdenum or chromoly steel is a steel widely used in the manufacture of tubes and finds many applications as forgings for the aerospace, oil and gas, automotive, and defense industries. Typical applications for uses of this steel include: forged valve bodies, pumps, aircraft engine mounts, welded tubing, fittings, hydraulic tools. Chromium molybdenum steel is a low alloy steel containing chromium and molybdenum as reinforcing agents, the added chromium helps to increase hardenability as well as corrosion resistance and the added molybdenum helps to increase toughness. It is in high demand by the motorsport and aerospace industry for its ductility, strength and relatively low weight. Moreover, its malleability is one of the characteristics of choice that makes it widely used in the construction of commercial and military aircraft as well as vehicles. Generally, chromoly steel is used in the form of solid or hollow tubes and in sheet form. The objective of this project is the development of steel on a laboratory scale, and the improvement of its mechanical properties by adding alloying elements (vanadium, Niobium) and by applying the deformation process. surface plastic as well as the optimization of heat treatment parameters. In addition, the intended application for this steel includes the shaping of tubes intended for mopeds and bicycles, hence the need to increase its weldability performance as well as its fatigue resistance.
