Metals and Alloys Division Team N°81: Forming and thermomechanical behavior of materials Project title : Development of a high strength HS grade long rolled product AISI 1080 by thermomechanical treatment Project manager: BERDJANE Djamel Members: MAALEM Badreddine, BENCHOUIEB Rachid, DJEMILI Samira, SEHAB Fahima, SLIMANI Kheireddine Summary of the research project The main concerns of steel manufacturers are the quality control of rolled steels, in terms of the desired properties (mechanical and dimensional), the reduction of the dispersion of these characteristics and the extension of the range of products. The objective of this study is to propose a tool which helps to validate the choice of the use of crude steel casting an unalloyed steel for heat treatment instead of a low alloy steel (gain in energy and ferroalloys) as basic product for obtaining the HS grade. This device should make it possible, during the development phase of a process, to provide a reliable answer on the feasibility of a new high-strength range by hot rolling (LRB Sider rolling mill). Improving the quality of these rolled products also requires a detailed analysis of the processes, simultaneously taking into account the intervening phenomena. As part of the expansion of the ranges developed in Algeria, this study will be a contribution to the understanding of the hot deformation mechanisms of long products in mid-carbon steel of AISI 1080 grade from a C80 eutectoid composition. We will illustrate the influence of the effects of thermal and mechanical coupling on the evolution of yield stress. In addition, this C80 grade can also be used for spare parts for Sider units (imported) after heat or other treatments. Due to its wear resistance and high hardness, these long steel products are widely used in buildings, metal construction, crushing, hammers, etc. This grade of AISI 1080 steel is used particularly in the manufacture of high resistance bars and wires and bolts.
