Elaboration and Development of Protective Coatings by Thermal Spraying 2025-2027

The objective of this project is the study and development of protective coatings produced by thermal spraying. These coatings are intended for the maintenance, repair, and integration of various industrial components and devices (protective, decorative, tribological, and biocompatible coatings, etc.). In this project, cermet and ceramic coatings (based on kaolin and calcium orthophosphate reinforced with nickel, iron, zinc, ZnO, and silicates) will be deposited by thermal spraying onto substrates. The aim is to provide both wear resistance and biocompatibility.

The coatings will be characterized morphologically and biologically using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and optical profilometry. Mechanical and tribological properties will be evaluated through hardness measurements, wear resistance (at room and high temperatures), and adhesion to the substrate. Corrosion resistance in aggressive industrial environments will also be investigated.

Furthermore, the application of thermal spraying for the finishing and surface treatment of additively manufactured parts will be explored. Finally, energy modeling of the thermal spraying system (thermal, geometrical, physical, and numerical models) will be carried out to optimize the deposition process parameters and coating performance.
