The emergence of research centres in Algerias

9/3/2025

After its independence (1962), Algeria gave a significant importance to economic development, mainly, the industrial sector. However, at that time, several research fields that has relation with the industrial sector were unknown or untapped, including that of Non-Destructive (NDT).
In fact, back that time there was only some companies which were active, such as SERTAL which was specialized only in radiography. So, other NDT techniques were almost non-existent. Meanwhile, there had been a real awareness about the importance of scientific research and its contribution to the technological development of the industry and thus, of the national economy. Consequently, there was an emergence to create few centresas well as institutes and then placethem at the disposal of differentuniversities’ laboratories, as it was the case of the Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI), the Scientific Centre of Nuclear Technologies (CSTN) which was replaced later on by the Commissariat for New Energies (CEN) in 1982.
Actually, thanks to these institutions, there had been a considerable progress in the field of research, leading to the creation of the High Commission for Research (UNHCR) in 1985, which included the development of specialized centres in several fields, including the Development Centre of Energy Conversion (DCEC).
