Improvement of performances and reliability of coatings and hardfacing 2016-2018 [2016-2018]

     The project aims to develop and improve the performance of drilling tools produced in Algeria. These are polycrystalline diamond tools (PDC) specifically intended for the oil industry, but can be adapted perfectly to other sectors such as water drilling, geothermal energy, civil engineering, geotechnical, careers... PDC tools exist either with body steel or tungsten carbide matrix. The steel bodies are machined and covered by Tungsten Carbide Hardfacing to limit erosion. Inserts in PDC are then brazed to the tool to provide the cutting element.

     The project is organized in three axes with strong interactions, which will be conducted in parallel:

- Improvement of hardfacing coatings applied on the surfaces in contact with the ground during the drilling operation in order to limit erosion (interlayer bond, deposition process, tungsten carbides).

- Improved connection between the inserts and the steel body of the tool (brazing process, interlayer bond to improve adhesion).

- Repair of worn tools: this operation can be renewed several times on the same tool. Note that a repaired tool is more efficient than a new tool.
